Bailey pulled a dust mask over her mouth and switched on the sander. With all the walls painted, the only big job left to do in Steven’s home was to sand and restain the floors.

The drone of another sander filled the house. For the last hour, Steven had been working in the bedrooms. They were hoping to stain the floorboards this afternoon, but that depended on how long it took to get everything ready. At the rate Bailey was working, it would be next week before the living room was finished.

Gripping the handle of the floor sander, she slowly moved up and down the room. Bailey still couldn’t believe how much difference a coat of paint could make to a house. Each time she arrived to help or bring food, Steven and Mila had completed another task. It was back-breaking, blister-inducing work, but it was worth every minute to see the transformation taking place.

A light tap on her shoulder made Bailey jump.

Steven turned off the sander. “I’ve finished the bedrooms. Are you happy for me to start in the hallway?”

“That would be great. The living room is taking longer than I thought.”

“This area would have had the most foot traffic. Compared to these floorboards, the ones in the bedrooms could almost be brand-new.”

Bailey shooed him away. “That doesn’t make me feel better. Enjoy sanding the hallway.”

“Yoo-hoo,” Mabel said from the doorway. “Is it all right if I come inside?”

Steven’s eyes widened. “Of course, it is. Just don’t walk on the floorboards that Bailey’s sanded. Is everything okay?”

Mabel slipped off her shoes. “Apart from Allan not listening to anything I say, life is wonderful. Although I had a little shock when I looked at the community Facebook page this morning.”

Bailey hoped that whatever had happened wasn’t going to create more work. Santa’s Secret Helpers were still knee-deep in Christmas wishes after another post went viral.

Mabel stood in the doorway between the living room and the entranceway. “Goodness. This looks completely different. You’re doing an incredible job.”

Bailey wiped her hands on her jeans. “Steven and Mila have done an amazing amount of work. I’m only the part-time helper.”

“Well, it’s all worth it. But that’s not why I’ve come to see Steven.” Mabel took her cell phone out of her pocket. “Has anyone told you about the video someone took of Mila?”

Steven’s face turned pale. “No, they haven’t.”

“It’s not something to be worried about.” Mabel tapped on the screen. “Here it is. It’s a lovely Facebook post.”

Steven’s expression didn’t change as he watched the video.

Bailey stood beside him. As soon as she saw what had been filmed, her gaze shot to Steven’s face. “I didn’t know anyone had videoed Mila singing.”

“But you knew they had their cell phones with them?”

“I know Mila has a cell phone for emergencies. I didn’t ask if the other children had one.”

When they were at The Fairy Forest, Charlotte had asked Mila to sing her favorite song. Dressed in their fairy costumes, the children around them had danced and twirled as Mila filled the room with sweet music.
